Hey everyone,
I've been dealing with some serious Achilles tendonitis and my doctor prescribed me prednisone. I finished the first round of treatment, but now he wants to taper it off slowly. Any tips on how to do this without making things worse?
Thanks,RunnerWithAches

Hi RunnerWithAches,
Tapering prednisone is important, especially when you've been on a higher dose for a while. Here’s what I’d recommend:
Start with Your Current Dose: Note the dosage of prednisone that you're currently taking.
Create a Taper Schedule:
- If your doctor prescribed 20 mg/day, he might suggest reducing it to 15 mg after a week or two.
Then drop down to 10 mg for another week or so before going to 7.5 mg.
Monitor Symptoms: Keep an eye on how you feel physically and emotionally as the dose is reduced. Sometimes, joint pain can flare up due to hormone fluctuations caused by tapering.
Stay Active but Gentle: Continue light physical activity (like walking) to keep your circulation going without overstraining the tendon.
Listen to Your Body: If symptoms worsen, it might be a sign to slow down the taper and consult with your doctor again for adjustment.
If you have any doubts or concerns about how fast or slow you should go, definitely reach out to your healthcare provider for personalized advice.
Hope this helps!

Thanks so much, DrMedic! That’s really helpful. I’ll start with my tapering schedule and keep an eye on how I feel. Should I expect any side effects from the tapering?

You're welcome, RunnerWithAches!
Tapering off prednisone can sometimes cause some symptoms as your body adjusts to lower levels of the hormone. Here are a few common side effects you might experience:
- Fatigue: You may feel more tired than usual.
- Joint Pain or Flaring Up: Since you're dealing with tendonitis, there's a chance that joint pain could intensify temporarily.
- Emotional Changes: Prednisone can affect your mood and energy levels. Some people report feeling anxious or depressed.
If any of these symptoms become too intense, reach out to your doctor immediately for guidance on adjusting the taper schedule.
Remember, communication with your healthcare provider is key throughout this process. They are there to support you in making the transition as smooth as possible.
Best of luck!

Hey RunnerWithAches,
I had a similar issue with my elbow tendonitis. Tapering was tricky but manageable. DrMedic's advice is spot-on! Also, I found that yoga helped me manage some of the discomfort during tapering without aggravating my injury.
Good luck!

Thanks so much for the support, DrMedic and YogaInPain! I’ll start with the tapering schedule and see how it goes. The yoga sounds like a good idea too.
